Osler medal essay contest

The three prizes will be awarded on the basis of the quality of both the essay and the presentation. Membership carries with it a subscription to the Association's journal, the Bulletin of the History of Medicine.

Only one entry may be submitted by each student. Students are not eligible to compete for the Osler Medal if they have completed at least one full year of graduate training in history, the history of science or medicine, or the humanities or social sciences by the closing date of the competition.

No student should submit an essay to both the Osler and Shryock competitions in the same year. Also submit a 1- or 2-page reflective piece describing which library resources you came to know well due to your research, how your skills grew as a researcher, and how using library material helped you to increase the scope, depth, and significance of your subject.

Shryock Medal Essay Contest 2018

All essays submitted for the Shryock Medal must be accompanied by the following items: The medal honors Richard Harrison Shryocka pioneer among historians interested in the history of medicine. The essay must have been written while the entrant was a student in good standing.

All of this year's essay award participants had to contend with an unexpected disruption to their research when the Osler Library had to close due to a roof fire in July. No student should submit an essay to both competitions in the same year. Reasonable travel expenses for the winner will be defrayed, and the winner will also receive a free two-year membership in the AAHM.

The essay maximum 12, words, including endnotes must be the result of original research or show an unusual appreciation and understanding of problems in the history of medicine.

The essay must have been written while the entrant was a student in good standing. First awarded inthe medal commemorates Sir William Osler, who stimulated an interest in the humanities among medical students and physicians.

This competition is open to students enrolled in a graduate program in history or a related discipline in the United States or Canada at the time of submission.
